Define your Artificial Intelligence strategy

The number of companies that implemented artificial intelligence (AI) grew by 270 percent in the past four years and tripled in 2018, according to Gartner, Inc.’s 2019 CIO Survey. The results showed that organizations across all industries are using AI in a variety of applications, but are struggling with the shortage of required talent.

The most recent survey conducted by Gartner shows that 37% of organizations have implemented Artificial Intelligence in some form.

“Four years ago, the implementation of AI was very limited, with only 10 percent of respondents reporting that their companies had implemented AI or would do so soon. By 2019, that number has increased to 37%, a 270% increase over four years,” said Chris Howard, distinguished vice president of research at Gartner. “If you are a CIO and your organization is not using AI, the chances are high that your competitors are, and this should be a concern for you.”

The purpose of the 2019 Gartner CIO Survey is to help CIOs and other IT leaders establish and validate their agendas for the upcoming year. Gartner gathered data from over 3,000 CIO respondents across 89 countries in leading industries, representing $15 trillion in revenue and public sector budgets, and $284 billion in IT spending.

AI is changing the game even with a talent shortage.

The deployment of AI has tripled in the past year, rising from 25 percent in 2018 to 37 percent today. The reasons for this significant increase are that AI capabilities have matured significantly, making companies more willing to implement the technology. “We are still far from general artificial intelligence that can take on complex tasks, but we have now entered the realm of augmented work and AI decision science: what we call ‘augmented intelligence,'” added Mr. Howard.

CIOs have realized that sustainable digital transformation and task automation go hand in hand. AI has become an integral part of every digital strategy and is already being used in a wide variety of applications. Survey results show that 52% of telecommunications organizations implement chatbots, and 38% of healthcare providers rely on computer-assisted diagnostics. Other operational use cases for AI include fraud protection and consumer segmentation.

The more companies work with AI, the clearer the implementation challenge will become. 54% of respondents in a Gartner Research Circle Survey consider the skill shortage to be the biggest challenge they are currently facing.

“To stay ahead, CIOs must be creative. If AI talent is unavailable, another option is to invest in training programs for employees with experience in statistics and data management. Some organizations also create job positions with ecosystems and business partners.”
